My Life during the Middle Ages in England

This is a story about a girl named Maris. She lived in England during the Middle Ages. Listen as Maris talks about her life long ago. You will then compare and contrast your life today with Maris's life. 

                                                                     

My name is Maris, and I live in England with my family. My father owns a shoe shop that is on the ground floor below our house. We also store wood for the fire and food to eat in this space. We live on the second floor above the shop. We eat, sleep, and play there.

                                                                                            

I wear a dress with long sleeves and shoes with long, pointed toes. I also wear a cap and a tunic which is something like a coat to stay warm. My brother wears long, pointed shoes just like me. He also wears a large shirt with a belt and tight pants.

                                                                                            

I am very busy on some days. I have to help my mother cook and do laundry, but I really like helping my father in the shoe shop. I get to see my friends when I go to the market with my parents. The market is a small place in our town where people buy and sell food. It only happens once a week.

                                                                                            

The week of the fair is my favorite time of year. A fair is like a special kind of market. There are games, lots of treats, and musicians. The reason I like the fair so much is because I can listen to music during the day and play games in the afternoon with my friends.
